Drabble Master List

Hi, I'm December 21st, and I write drabbles.

Rather a lot of them, actually. Fanfics of 100 words exactly, written for assorted fandoms. This is a master list of all the drabbles that I've written.

The list, complete with links to my journal entries, is Collapse )

A Question of Consent

This is something that's been bothering me for a while now about a couple TV shows that I watch. One is Lost Girl, the other is The Almighty Johnsons. These shows are both bubblegum shows that are entertaining but not what you'd call intellectually stimulating, and both focus just as much on the sex lives of their characters as they do on the plot of the week. They also both have protagonists that are serial date rapists.

Happy Winter Solstice!

As is my tradition, I review my year in fandom every December 21st.

This is my ninth anniversary as a fanfic writer, as someone who does more than just watch the movies and TV shows (and secretly reads the occasional fanfic) but actually goes out there and participates.

I've been in a bit of a slump, I admit it. I wrote exactly four fanfics in the last year - and one of them was a drabble. But one of them makes me grin just thinking about it - the crackiest crack fic ever. Called "A Most Unusual Friendship", it's a dialog-only crossover featuring a friendship between Haven's Barn and Once Upon a Time's Dark Curse. Now, neither of these things are people. They're a building. (Sortof.) And a magic spell. Not people. Well, they weren't before my fic, anyhow.

I'm still maintaining the Haven Public Library, but it's stopped being fun and started being a chore. And while there's more work I want to put into it, it's just that. Work. I dunno, stopping before Haven's over - which might be next year and might not - feels like quitting. But it's a lot of my time, and if it's not fun any more, then why am I doing it?

Maybe it's because I'm not enjoying Haven quite as much as I used to. Don't get me wrong, I still like it, I still watch it. But it's lost that addict's buzz for me. I started writing reviews for every episode in this last season but I stopped after the first three or so because I didn't really have anything to say. Duke is amusing. Mara is annoying. And really annoying. And will they kill her off, already? Yay, Audrey/Nathan. And, really, I didn't have that many opinions beyond that. And next season's going to have (spoiler) as a guest star, and I find that very disappointing, because, yes, okay, he's a science fiction legend but really not that good of an actor. Heresy, I know.

So, what's my future in fandom? In ficwriting? I don't know. I certainly appreciate all of you, my friends in the (increasingly empty) halls of LiveJournal. So, happy holidays, hope you have a great year next year, and with this post I once again claim this, the longest night of the year.

Disco Fever

Thoughts about the latest episode of Haven, "Spotlight".

[Spoiler (click to open)]
This was a different episode, with so much time spent with Nathan and Mara in the cabin. It made my shipper heart go pitter-pat, in spite of the fact that Audrey and Nathan aren't together. (Mostly.)

Dwight's kinda had a stick up his, em, hind end the last few episodes. He's wandering around being all self-righteous and King of Haven. Get over yourself, Dwight.

I'm sorry, but first we had a monkey Trouble, and now we have a disco ball Trouble. What will next week bring, a silly putty Trouble? And why does nobody use the word "laser"? Gloria even says "light amplification Trouble" and the word 'laser' started as an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation."

Yes, Nathan, "we just have to treat her like Audrey" does make it sound like you're so desperately in denial that you've convinced yourself that Mara will become Audrey again if you think happy thoughts. I believe you, but I don't blame Duke for not believing you - especially since about two days ago, you had to convince him that his denial was killing people.

Hear No Evil

This week's collection of thinky thoughts about "Speak No Evil", episode 5x02 of Haven, having first aired last Friday Thursday.

[Spoiler (click to open)]
This was really just part two of a two-part episode, so this seems a lot like a continuation of last week's thoughts. But on that note, really, who names two part episodes "See No Evil" and "Speak No Evil" and doesn't have a "Hear No Evil" episode? The (Verb) No Evil thing is a three-part thing, you can't just use 2/3 of it. (Grumps.)

So Jennifer's dead. Another spunky sidekick (around thirty, with dark hair) that didn't survive the season finale. I liked Jennifer. But then, I liked Claire and a lot of her predecessors too. I guess our main three aren't allowed to have any new playmates for more than a season.

I didn't catch the first time I watched this that Mara slammed Vickey's hand in the car door when Vickey was helping Nathan, and that's why she had to go to the hospital. Poor Vickey. I hope she'll still be able to draw; I liked the way she owned her Trouble.

Okay, now Dwight's Chief of Police and Leader of the Guard. Is he going to be King of Haven by the time this is all over?

Very, very interesting with Audrey still being "there" in Mara. And Mara apparently not hearing Audrey and Nathan's conversation.

I continue to like the way they're growing the various relationships in this show, like How Duke and Gloria are getting along when you'd never really expect them to.

Mmm, not very many opinions this time around.

Welcome Back, Haven

So, Haven Season 5 is now off and running! And how weird is that to type - "Haven Season 5" - I never really thought we would get this far. Haven, how I've missed you.

To celebrate, I'm writing up a collection of my thoughts about the season 5 premiere, "See No Evil". If everything goes to plan, I'll continue celebrating all season long!

As you might expect from such a thing, there are spoilers.

[Spoiler (click to open)]
"That lighthouse just can't catch a break." Heh.

So, Mara's pretty nasty. I did feel that the only reason that she shot the barista was to prove to the viewers that Mara is bad news. She's not just Audrey with a 'tude, she's evil. And yet, even though Mara denies it, it's pretty clear that Audrey is in there somewhere - she may not be able to keep Mara from shooting Nathan, but she can keep her from killing him. I also love that Mara has access to all of her previous memories - I hope this means that we'll find out more about Audrey's and Haven's past, like her comments about Dwight's Trouble.

I had this idea last season - if (her) killing the one she loves will end the Troubles, and she's now Mara, and Mara loves William, will the Troubles end if Mara kills William?

Yay they brought Gloria back! Did anyone other than me think that Vickey (Gloria's assistant) really wouldn't mind taking on the job of being Baby Aaron's mom? Also, really grooved on how she has taken ownership of her Trouble.

I swear it was just a coincidence that I started my last fic with "Ta-dah!" and then Mara used that line too.

Okay, I get that Duke now has all the Troubles of Haven Past. But all at once, or one at a time? Is Duke going to be the Troubled Person of the Week for all of the Troubles of the Week this season? Do his eyes start bleeding every time he takes on a new Trouble, or was that only for the monkey trouble? And did the Trouble target its victims because they were exposed to Duke's blood? The monkey Trouble was creepy, BTW. I wish we'd seen a bit more of it.

You know, the timeline for this show drives me absolutely bananas. When Dwight said that Duke's grandfather was the prime suspect in a murder in 1929, he must've meant great-grandfather. Because we saw Duke's grandfather in 1954, there's no way he would have been old enough to be a farmhand or a murder suspect in 1929. And the last three episodes (including this one) have all taken place on the same day. I think that it means that it's still 2011 in Haven.

I particulary enjoyed Nathan throwing the line "Why do you think I'm going to answer any of your questions?" back at Mara.

So, who gets the "most beat up on" award this week? Dwight, for getting shot three times (but in a bulletproof vest) and tasered twice in the same encounter, or Nathan for getting beaten up twice and shot once (without a vest) in two different encounters?

Do you all know about Haven: Origins? Short "webisodes" (well, just one so far) that take place in Haven's past, about two minutes, depicting stuff that happened in Haven's history. And the first one is titled "Witches - Part 1", which to me implies that there will be more than one story. You can find them (it) on and and a few other places around the web. And it makes me wonder if the theme of the season is going to be 'Haven's Past', now that we have both these webisodes and Mara wandering around with memories of Haven's past.

The teaser for "coming this season on Haven" was very tantalizing. I am officially psyched.
